On 23 July 2026, the Inaugural Forum of Journal of Perioperative Innovation (JPI) was held in Crowne Plaza Hotel, Guangzhou. Leading anaesthesiologists and perioperative medicine experts from major hospitals and universities across the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area gathered to discuss the founding vision, editorial workflows and internationalisation strategy, as well as national and provincial policy support in China.
JPI is jointly sponsored by Sun Yat-sen University and Higher Education Press, and hosted by The Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. The journal focuses on anaesthesiology and perioperative medicine, pain diagnosis and critical care, enhanced recovery after surgery, intelligent medical innovation, and translational research. It aims to fill the English-journal gap in South China and the Greater Bay Area and strengthen regional academic voice.
Founding Editor-in-Chief Professor Ziqing Hei is a Grade-II Professor, Chief Physician and doctoral supervisor, and the academic lead of the Surgical Anaesthesia Centre at The Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. He also serves as Chief Expert of the Guangdong Clinical Research Centre for Anaesthesiology and Chair of the Anaesthesiologists Branch of the Guangdong Medical Doctor Association. He has long worked on perioperative organ protection and anaesthesia quality management, led multiple national research projects, and published more than 200 SCI-indexed papers as first or corresponding author.
Professor Weifeng Yao, Executive Deputy Editor-in-Chief of JPI at The Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, presented the founding background and overall development plan. JPI will be published quarterly with double-blind peer review and open access. Calls for papers of special issues have already been launched, including "Artificial Intelligence in Perioperative Medicine." The editorial office has completed manuscript solicitation for the first issue, and the submitted manuscripts are now under review. The international editorial board already includes more than 110 members from over 10 countries, forming a collaborative network seeded in the Greater Bay Area, radiating nationwide, and reaching the world.
The expert discussion was chaired by dual-appointment professor Jie Xu of The Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. Experts from core Greater Bay Area institutions — including Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, The First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, The Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, The Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, Guangdong Women and Children Hospital, The First People' s Hospital of Foshan, The First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University, Guangzhou First People' s Hospital, and Zhujiang Hospital of Southern Medical University — all engaged in lively discussion and offered constructive recommendations.
Jingzhou Wang, Director of the Journal Centre at The Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, noted that the national and provincial policies supporting first-class journal will provide a strategic window for JPI, while the centre' s cluster advantage lays a solid foundation for launch. As the hospital' s seventh medical journal, JPI will draw on the centre' s mature multi-journal operations and its experience in full-process English journal publishing and international dissemination, ensuring a high-standard, well-regulated start.
The Inaugural Forum clarified the path forward and built academic consensus. Going forward, JPI will seize the strategic opportunity of first-class journal development, leverage Greater Bay Area academic strengths, focus on perioperative innovation and clinical translation, and continue to publish high-quality research, strengthening China's international academic voice in this field and contributing to the nation's science and technology agenda. Researchers worldwide are welcome to submit, review and collaborate.
